"He recognized his father, first to remember who she was. The identification of tired-looking man, who hovered on the edge of his vision, it was like an electric shock. The next instant he realized who it was that woman and her touch because it dislikes. reemerged other fragments. The memory came back to his name: Charles Acland. His occupation: British Army lieutenant. His last mission in Iraq.
View memories clear (and I have reviewed several times following, to try to understand) the time at which the RAF had risen sull'Hercules departing for the Middle East. assumed that the plane had crashed during take-off, because the last thing he remembered was the moment when it was wearing a seat belt ... "
Outgoing February 24, 2011, Minette Walters's psychological thriller, a novel of great emotional impact and great empathy with the main character, Charles Acland, during a mission in Iraq is the victim of a terrorist attack, along with two companions, who die while he is injured.
His condition did not appear serious, but hopelessly lost one eye. Not only that, one side of his face remains disfigured, despite several surgical procedures to which it is subjected. Following this incident, the army must consider the possibility of re-Lieutenant Acland in service, but after being kept under observation by doctors and a psychiatrist military hospital, it seems that something has changed in his attitude and began to suffer from terrible migraines.
become nervous and irritable, as soon as it touched down throws his head and attack anyone who gets in front equal, that they are women or elderly people, it makes no difference .. it seems that his ex-girlfriend Jen has left him for this reason, before leaving for the mission in Iraq, but after the attack seems that this is worse.
He hates parents, especially his mother, which he said the suffocating attention and is unwilling to return home with them after discharge from hospital.
When a fight takes a Pakistani in a pub, because this had always just pushed, is reduced in a sorry state that the woman who runs the place - Jackson - impressive physique in bodybuilding, as well as Dr. , offers a bed and medical care and, despite everything, takes to heart the fate of this boy with no home and no future and tries to understand the reasons for his behavior.
At the same time, mysterious murders take place, definitely committed by the same person for the repetition of the modus operandi: older men, widowed or alone, hit repeatedly, until his death. The police started a thorough investigation, which inevitably lead to trace Charles Acland. Too many clues seem to accuse him of murder. Can he prove his innocence?
I must say that I was passionate about the history of this guy, thinking like a daily report about dead soldiers in missions in countries considered "hot", Iraq, Afghanistan etc..
And how many of these are guys who would be willing to give their lives for their country. But it also happens to return home badly injured and perhaps not best suited to return to the army, often maimed in body and mind. And what a soldier can do more if not yet a soldier?
Charles Acland has hoped to be back in the end of the military, but has also acquired the guilt of not being able to save his men. How can we not blame him for the anger in his body? The writer, with plush step brings us back to the thread of the story, the murder of men of advanced age, who meet at the pub to get a drink and a chat, looking for a little 'lonely for companionship in their lives. But there is always the risk of meeting the wrong people and, perhaps, not having the wits and reflexes that leads to recognition of good and evil. You are returned to children, blamed by the same children who received their teachings, please do not open the door to strangers and not to run with the board in his pocket .. but there is never rest easy!
The finish is really amazing .. 444 pages of novel, sip, it was worth it. The writer
